At the event itself:

Food served at the Hall from 11.30am to 2pm - Sandwiches, Soups and other goodies by local chef Rachel from "I Love Local" Food truck. Some teas and coffee are also usually available inside the Community Hall as well as baked goods from local creators.

 

Local restaurants are usually open during the event for those of you wanting to sample something different. A google search would yield some results for ideas on dining/lunch options in town. 

Here are a few: Shingle Bay Bistro, Beaches Restaurant at Northern Shores Lodge, Hekate's Clubhouse at the golf course, Raincoast Breads.

ACCOMMODATION

​

It is important for those of you coming to the event and wanting to stay overnight, to book your accommodation in Sandspit before the event takes place. There are several lodges, B&B, guest houses and camping options in town. 

For locals, it is time to contact your friends and ask them if you can stay over!

To find your accommodation, the best is to do a google search.

Here are a few: Seaport B&B, Bayview Garden Guesthouse, Northern Shores Lodge, Moresby Island Guesthouse, Hekate's Retreat, Otter Island cottage, Sunrise Cabin, Maada's Nest.

TRANSPORT

There is no public transport on island. A shuttle service exists between Queen Charlotte and the Sandspit Airport operated by Gwaii Taxi and tours. Contact them for a schedule.

 

We encourage people to carpool to come to the event. 

​

It is also possible to cycle to the event, as the ferry landing is only 15km from the event's venue (about an hour on the bike) and is a along a scenic quiet road. 

​

There is also of course the option to come over with your own boat and moor at our Marina.

ABOUT SANDSPIT

​

Sandspit, also known as K'il Kun or K'il Llnagaay, is the only community on Moresby island. It is also the smallest community on Haida Gwaii, at under 300 residents.

​

It is a quiet and quaint town on a "spit", a sandy incursion into the ocean. There are 2 beaches in Sandspit, one facing Northwest, the other facing Southeast.

​

It is the site of the main airport for the archipelago and daily year-round Air Canada flights are connecting us to Vancouver.

 

The town was developed around the logging industry and was once much more populated. Sandspit is known for Loggers Sports Day, an event organized every July in Sandspit since more than 50 years. It is also known for the Coho Derby held every fall in the Copper Bay area.

There are a few trails accessible from Sandspit and most notably the Dover Trail, a 2 to 3 hour loop trail that goes through an old growth forest and is inside a conservancy area. The trail head is just at the edge of the town site and is quite accessible, though the trail can sometimes be hard for some visitors.

There are numerous trails in the Onward Point area as well. You may want to check with the Sandspit Visitor Centre, located inside the airport terminal, for more information on trails and attractions of Moresby Island.

An unpaved loop road connects the community with scenic areas such as Gray Bay, Mosquito and Skidegate lake and the Moresby Camp area, where most visitors to Gwaii Haanas, the National Park Reserve that protects the bottom third of the archipelago, will embark on their exploration tour.
